Today, we are incredibly proud to announce that we have reached a landmark that once felt like a distant dream: 20,000 hotel breaks gifted to unpaid carers across the UK.
20,000 breaks. 20,000 chances to sleep in, to step away, to remember who you are beyond your caring role.
And we're only getting started. This year, we took one of our most exciting steps yet by giving every carer the ability to take two breaks per year because we know that one escape is never quite enough. This milestone is a testament to the generosity of our hotel partners, the dedication of our team, and above all, the incredible resilience of every carer.

Our Impact:
There are over 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, yet 68% say they have never been able to take a break from their caring responsibilities. And this isn't a minority issue - 50% of us will find ourselves in a caring role before the age of fifty, long before retirement even comes into view.
The need is enormous. That's exactly why reaching this milestone means so much to us:

What makes it real for me is the maths behind it. We know that 52% of full-time unpaid carers haven't had a break in five years. So 20,000 breaks isn't 20,000 transactions. It's 20,000 times someone who had completely stopped prioritising themselves got to exhale for a night or two.
The thing I'm proudest of is how we got here. A team of eight on a four-day week. 1,000+ breaks in January alone, double what we did the same month last year. We didn't scale by throwing money or headcount at it. We scaled by building smarter systems and trusting each other to run with them.

By donating their vacant rooms, they have turned empty beds into moments of genuine rest and restoration for carers who need it most. It costs them little, but for a carer it can mean everything, and we are endlessly grateful for their continued belief in what we do.
Equally, a huge thank you goes to our community partners, whose tireless work referring carers to Carefree and supporting them through the process has been invaluable. They are the bridge between those who need a break and the break itself, and this milestone belongs to them just as much as it does to us.
Over the past eight years, the story of Carefree, and the carers at the heart of it, has resonated far and wide. We've been featured across dozens of publications and programmes, from BBC Radio and Forbes to Belfast Live and beyond, shining a spotlight on the millions of unsung carers across the UK who deserve so much more recognition.
Along the way, we've also been humbled to have our work recognised with some incredible accolades, taking home awards from The Smiley Film Awards, The Business Charity Awards, The Skift Idea Awards, The Travolution Awards, and The Third Sector Awards. But as proud as we are of every trophy, the greatest measure of our success will always be in the breaks delivered and the carers who finally got the rest they deserved.
