Feeling Normal for a Minute: June's Carer Testimonials

Every month, we highlight carers who have taken a Carefree break, and every month, their words remind us why this work matters so deeply. In June, the month we celebrated Carers Week alongside so many of you, the testimonials shared a theme that stopped us in our tracks: the simple, profound relief of feeling normal again.

For the millions of unpaid carers in the UK, life runs to someone else's clock. Routines, medication times, appointments, always being ready. These carers told us what happens when, just for a night, the clock stops: they breathe, they reconnect, and they remember that ordinary moments: a shared bottle of wine, a lie-in, a jacuzzi, are anything but ordinary when you're a carer.

Here are their stories.

Carers taking a hotel break

No clock to watch

For Helen, a stay at the Park Royal Hotel meant something carers rarely get: time with no routine to follow and no one else to put first.

"The break was a time to focus on myself and not have to put others first. There was no clock watching or routine to follow. I enjoyed relaxing in the jacuzzi, nice food, comfortable surroundings and the feeling of escapism. The hotel staff were all very nice and friendly."

Escapism isn't a luxury for carers, it's a lifeline.

Recharged in a single night

Caroline's stay at Chesford Grange was just one night, but, as she discovered, one night can do a remarkable amount.

"The hotel was fantastic. The room we were allocated was perfect and couldn't have been better. All the staff we met were so friendly and helpful. Although we were only there for the one night, it really recharged our batteries. We visited lots of great local places. We could have done with 2 nights really, but we were grateful for the one night for sure. We returned home feeling rejuvenated."

Rejuvenated, recharged, and already dreaming of the next one. We love to hear it.

Feeling normal for a minute

Yvonne's testimonial from Norton Park moved us deeply. It captures, better than we ever could, what a break really means for a carer on the edge.

"The break was amazing. My wife and I were able to relax and swim, and most importantly we had a lovely evening meal sharing a bottle of wine (which we never do, as we always have to be ready to drive) and talk about us, not everyone else. We felt normal for a minute. I have been collapsing under the pressure, and that one night really lifted me. I felt connected to my wife and to my life, not just thinking about the lives and needs of others."

"We felt normal for a minute." That single sentence is why Carefree exists. It's no wonder 77% of carers tell us their break contributed 'a lot' to keeping them from reaching breaking point.

Breathing in your own time

For Sylvia, her break at Village Birmingham Walsall was about the small freedoms most of us take for granted — waking in her own time, moving at her own pace.

"Being away from the person I care for, gave me a fresh breath of fresh air. Time to breathe and take time out for myself without having to worry, knowing they were in good hands. Getting up in my own time and taking time to look after myself and taking my time without rushing, was just lovely and for that I thank the Carefree team."

Knowing your loved one is in good hands is what makes truly switching off possible and Sylvia's relief is palpable.

"It's not selfish"

Emma and her husband marked their 25th wedding anniversary with a break at Stratford Manor, and came home with something even more valuable than the celebration itself.

"It was our 25th wedding anniversary, and we wanted to celebrate away from our home. So we chose to do so through this, and we had an amazing time. We were thoroughly spoilt by the hotel and went home relaxed. It made us realise we can leave the people we care for, and that's not selfish of us, it's what's needed for us to go forward in our caring role. Thank you so much for our break away."

Emma said it perfectly: taking a break isn't selfish. It's what carers need to keep going.

An ordinary night can be extraordinary

A shared bottle of wine. A lie-in. An evening with no clock to watch. None of this month's carers asked for anything remarkable, and that's exactly the point. When you provide unpaid care every week, as millions of people across the UK do, it's the ordinary moments that slip away first.

One night is all it took to bring them back. As Yvonne put it, that one night "really lifted me."

If you're a full-time unpaid carer, your ordinary moment is waiting.
